Abundantly More Kindness

There’s a running joke between my husband and I that we have three little sweetie pies. Vera is a pecan pie, Eve is an apple pie, and Lia is a key lime pie. Because Lia is a little bit tangy. She is mostly sweet, but every now and then she gets sour.

No one brings out Lia’s sourness like her sisters. During the final months of this past school year, Lia and I would be together for hours, just the two of us, while the twins were at school. We’d have wonderful days! She is a great independent player. She will help me with whatever I am doing. Generally, she is happy just to be.

And then her sisters get off the bus. Competition mode turns on and Lia begins picking fights. These are great training moments and I’ve witnessed instant heart change in our youngest daughter. But I cannot take the credit for it. If Eve or Vera step aside, give Lia a little attention and buddy up with her for a while, she becomes a different person.

It’s like the adage says, “A little kindness goes a long way.”

Sometimes we are fortunate to have major moments of kindness, where we can bless someone else in a big way. But the little moments, like the ones I’ve witnessed between my girls, occur daily. Every day we can make the choice to do the kind thing, or the “me” thing.

I knew a man whose eyes would twinkle with kindness. I think Jesus had those eyes too. And so can we. So let’s commit to this together. Every time a kind thought enters your mind, don’t keep it to yourself. Build someone and let your eyes shine with kindness.

Kindness: That temper or disposition which delights in contributing to the happiness of others, which is exercised cheerfully in gratifying their wishes, supplying their wants or alleviating their distresses.

Noah Webster

Monday: Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. – Proverbs 12:25

Tuesday: So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Wednesday: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. – Matthew 7:12

Thursday: So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. – Galatians 6:910

Friday: Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. – Ephesians 4:32
