Parenting is hard! It requires so much more than simply feeding and clothing little people. To train your children, raise them with intention, takes a lot of work. And sometimes I am just not up to the task. The controlling part of me watches them, looking for mistakes that need to be corrected. The exhausted part of me prefers to kick them to the basement or outside and let them do their own thing. Most of the time, I’m somewhere in the middle.
Fully aware that I could not do it without the grace of God.
I am usually aware of when my parenting fails instantly. But I do not fail in praying for my children. I pray for them daily. Multiple times. There is so much I want for them, so much I want to protect them from, that I am constantly turning to God. I can’t do it! I can’t control everything. But I know the One who is in control. And, thankfully, His Word has taught me how to pray for my children because my own words fall short.
My favorite prayer to pray over my children is found in Ephesians. To paraphrase, it goes something like this:
“God, you are everything. I surrender my heart and the ones that I love to you. Watch over my daughters and fill them with your Spirit, empowering them with an inner strength to obey you and do life your way. Make your home in their hearts. Help them to know you and to love you, to experience you, so that they will be rooted in your love. So they will stand strong no matter what, for all their lives. Knowing you and your love is everything. Draw them to you now, Lord, and help them not to seek fulfillment in any other thing or person. You alone make them complete. Help them to understand this. Bless them with an abundant life, filled with your power.”
There is a lot to unpack in the verses this prayer draws from. There’s a lot of truth to understand and life by. God is creator and Lord of all. His resources are limitless and He is more than able to transform us. Christ dwelling in our hearts makes all the difference. Knowing – experiencing – His love makes our roots of faith grow. This is where our strength comes from. When we experience His love, we are made complete. Not other relationships. Not social status. Not possessions. It is God who completes us. He fills our lives with abundance, with spiritual and permanent abundance. Realizing this and living in the truth of it is when God’s transforming power is unleashed in our lives.
Are your roots growing into God’s love? Or are you seeking fulfillment by chasing other things?
Abundantly More – Knowing God and Making God Known.
When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. – Ephesians 3:14-19
