God’s Promises: He Keeps Us

Some seasons of life are hard, painful, and filled with sorrow. The weariness is overwhelming, your emotions are barely in check and threaten to breach the surface at unexpected moments. Have you ever experienced that?

I understand. Sometimes I feel like I’m being plunged under deep water one moment only to soak in the sun the next. In and out, in and out. The concerns that fill my heart never leave, but sometimes I can push them aside and enjoy the blessings too. Because even with sorrow there can be blessings, unrelated gifts of joy and peace.

My situation – my family’s situation – is complicated. And it is hard. One moment my heart cries out for mercy, even though a part of me is afraid of what that mercy might mean. Another moment I’m convinced that this struggle is temporary. For now, anyway. Because there are bright moments. We live in hope of the bright moments.

We were never promised life without pain. The people we love were not promised life without pain. And though we cannot get through life without suffering, we can get through the suffering and experience life. Our suffering is not without hope.

There is something that I know and I want you to know too. There is a mighty and powerful God who created the universe. He made billions and billions of stars and named them. He put the heavens and the earth in order. He created life and saw to the tiniest of details. He made atoms and molecules and established the blueprint for all life, every unique one. He is holy. Sin cannot touch him. He is just. He is on the side of righteousness. And He is our Savior, giving himself as a sacrifice so we can have the hope of life that is outside this world. Life that is free of pain and all the suffering that comes from a sinful world.

And this God, who is bigger than the galaxies and the creator of your DNA, has called you to himself. Through His death He purchased your freedom and because of His resurrection you can have life. This one-of-a-kind God, supreme and good and unchanging, has promised to walk through every single dark and hard moment with you. You will go through deep waters, but He will go with you. You will face rivers of difficulty, but He will not let you drown. You will feel the heat of oppression, but He will protect you from being consumed.

God has promised it and He will do what he says. The question is will you trust Him to walk with you as He’s promised? Cling to His promise to keep you close. Let Him be your lifeline.

But now, O Jacob, listen to the LORD who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. – Isaiah 43:1-3a NLT
