God’s Promises: He is With Us

I remember very clearly the emotions that plagued me during that crisis. We all have a faith crisis from time to time and this particular one affected me in my early twenties. I needed space and time to process things but I was afraid. Then one Sunday the pastor, my dad, referenced Romans 8:38-39 in the sermon and I felt a complete sense of release come over me.

Because God’s promises to be with me do not depend on my performance.

It doesn’t matter which church I attend, as long as the preaching is Biblical and doesn’t compromise the truth. It can be the church my family attends or a different one. God loves me no matter where I worship.

It doesn’t matter if I have an unbroken streak on my Bible reading plan or if I fall behind for a day. God loves me whether or not I have perfect attendance.

It doesn’t matter if I regularly write content to build up others in their faith or if I simply consume the content others have written. God’s love does not depend on how disciplined I am to sit at my computer and write.

So many expectations are ones that I put on myself. Yes, spiritual discipline should be pursued. Yes, I need to faithfully attend church, serve in my local church, and pursue God personally. Yes, I need to be faithful in the things God has entrusted to me. But I do not have to be perfect at it. It does not have to be a wall that I build around myself and cannot be moved.

God’s love will not leave me. He loves me whether I live in my hometown or I move across the country. He loves me when I get up early and when I sleep in. He loves me when I boldly proclaim His truths and when I slump in private despair. He loves me whether I stick it out at my current job or start a new one. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can keep God’s love away.

With this in my heart, I can boldly walk into the next season of life, leaving some things behind and picking up others without fear. Because God has promised that nothing has the power to separate me from His love. And some of the other things I hold so tightly to were never meant to be given first place.

So go boldly. Drop what needs to be dropped and do what needs to get done. God does not require perfect performance. He just asks that you love Him back – with your heart (affection), soul (will), and mind (intellect). God has promised to be with you no matter where you go.

Do you trust him enough to believe it’s true?

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 8:38-39 NLT
